Use our free calculator and expert guide to decide if fixing your microwave makes sense — or if it's time for a new one.
Microwaves are the trickiest appliance to evaluate. They're relatively cheap to replace but contain high-voltage components that make DIY repair dangerous. That said, some repairs make sense:
For most countertop microwaves, the math usually favors replacement:
| Issue | Typical Cost | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| Not heating food | $75 – $200 | High |
| Turntable not spinning | $50 – $125 | Low |
| Sparking inside | $50 – $150 | Medium |
| Door won't close | $50 – $150 | Low |
| Display not working | $75 – $175 | Medium |
Do not attempt to repair a microwave yourself. Microwaves contain high-voltage capacitors that can hold a lethal charge even when unplugged. Always have microwave repairs done by a qualified technician.
Honestly, usually no. Microwaves are the one appliance where I'd lean toward replacement most of the time. A new countertop microwave runs $80 to $200, and most repairs cost almost that much just for the service call. If you've got a built-in or over-the-range model that costs $400+ to replace, that changes the math.
Replace it if the magnetron (the part that actually makes the microwaves) has failed, if you see sparking or smoke, if the door seal is damaged, or if the unit is more than 8 years old and acting up. For countertop models specifically, replacement almost always beats repair.
Microwave repairs run $50 to $400 depending on the issue. A simple fuse replacement is on the low end. A magnetron replacement is on the high end and often costs more than just buying a new countertop unit. Built-in and over-the-range microwaves are pricier to repair because of the install work involved.
Sparking usually means damaged interior paint, a broken waveguide cover, or a failing magnetron. Stop using it immediately, that's a fire risk. A waveguide cover is a cheap fix, but a failing magnetron typically means it's time to replace the whole unit.
Most microwaves last 7 to 10 years with normal use. Built-in and over-the-range models tend to last longer because they're better built, but they also cost more when something goes wrong.
